I was born, raised and trained (as a medic) in the UK, and am now also naturalised French. My volunteering began with Cancer Support Switzerland in 2020. Volunteering has always been an important part of my work life and, after the final contract expired, I found myself in the happy position of making volunteering my full-time activity. The connectedness, professionalism and support that Cancer Support Switzerland can provide, and that people with cancer and those close to them are looking for, is so special! Along the way I’ve worked on documents, fund raising and information stands; I’m also a trained peer supporter.
Since the 1990s I’ve worked in hospital, public health and health policy in the UK, South Africa, Gambia, and most recently at the UN. Over the years I have accompanied people with cancer: either friends or through work, and I recognise how hard it can be navigating health systems and finding the right care. Especially in a foreign setting and a second language.
Getting to know people inspires me and so I find it satisfying and motivating to contribute in some way to providing services and care that really suit an individual and promote their wellbeing. Alongside volunteering with Cancer Support Switzerland, I’m a trained Thanadoula and I spend time at La Maison de Tara as well as giving the training course “Last Aid” under the auspices of Palliative Genève.
